From midnight tonight, an all-Island speed limit of 40mph will be introduced.
The Chief Minister confirmed the news in today's press briefing.
He said the Council of Ministers has decided to enforce the limit from 12am today.
The aim is to prevent any major trauma and ease demand on both emergency services and the hospital - officers say one crash could take up multiple beds at Noble's and staff that are required elsewhere.
He also said 30mph zones could also be reduced to 20mph if they think it's necessary.
Police in both marked and unmarked vehicles will be monitoring behaviour and will take action where necessary.
