Dog owners urged to control pets in uplands

Dog owners are being urged to do their bit to protect the Island upland wildlife.

Owners are being asked by government to keep their canines on a lead at all times in those areas so as not to disturb ground nesting birds or livestock.

Officials say the lambing season is well underway and is a crucial time of year for farmers, whilst ground nesting birds are particularly vulnerable and can abandon their nests if they feel endangered.

DEFA Minister, Geoffrey Boot MHK, says whilst the vast majority of dog walkers are sensible, the irresponsible few can cause avoidable distress to wildlife.

Those caught intentionally or recklessly disturbing nesting birds could face a fine of up to £10,000.
