Free school meal vouchers being given to parents

Parents of children eligible for free school meals are being given free school meal vouchers to purchase food at Shoprite stores.

They'll be sent out every two weeks to those who qualify and will have a value of £23 for primary school pupils and £29 for those in secondary school but can only be used to buy groceries excluding alcohol, lottery tickets, tobacco and non-food products.

The scheme has been brought in as families have struggled to pick up meals from schools due to self-isolation or recent travel restrictions.

Each voucher will be valid for a fortnight until the next one is delivered.

Schools were closed last month to all but vulnerable children and children of key workers.
