Prison for man found drinking at friend's house despite warning

A man caught drinking lager at his friend’s house after a previous warning from police has been jailed for breaking coronavirus restrictions.

Wayne Mellor of Hazel Close in Douglas appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse.

The 35 year old admitted breaking the Emergency Powers Act by being out of his home without good reason.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon said unemployed Mellor had been warned by police after he was caught visiting his girlfriend’s home on April 16.

Just two days later, he was found at a friend’s house on Alder Road in Douglas drinking cans of beer.

He told police he’d gone to the Post Office for his friend, but it was shut and so he’d bought cans of lager before spending two hours drinking.

Mrs Hughes said some people still weren’t getting the message about maintaining social distancing, telling Mellor he had no excuse after his previous warning.

She jailed him for one month, saying it was the minimum for him to consider the serious nature of his crime.
