A roadmap drawn up by government is outlining the challenges of getting children back into school.
The framework has been shared with teachers and their unions following discussions with education professionals and is based on scientific advice.
Among the issues which are being raised include physical distancing, increased hygiene and cleaning, altering the school day and transport.
Education, Sport & Culture Minister, Dr Alex Allinson MHK, says any decision to increase the number of pupils allowed in school would be done in a phased process.
He adds the current policy for schools is regularly reviewed and changes will only be made after consultation and in line with the latest medical guidance.
