£3 million or airport will lose UK Domestic Status

The Department of Infrastructure will ask Tynwald to approve spending of almost three million pounds for a new outward baggage system at the airport.

If Tynwald approves the spend, the money will be used to fund a new conveyor belt system and new x-ray machines which the airport is required to have under EU law.

The airport was told in September last year that its x-ray machines would have to be updated to Standard 2 level by this September.

If the airport fails to comply with the upgrade it will lose its UK Domestic Status.

Airport director Ann Reynolds told 3FM this would have serious consequences for passengers.
