The Island's Cyber Security Centre is advising that ID documents should never be posted online in open forums.
It comes after a local woman found her driving licence is being used by Facebook scammers to offer Isle of Man licences without taking exams.
A spokesman from the Centre says they've discovered the images for the licences were taken from publicly available posts, with the PPV being a template from the government website.
He adds that while posts are made with good intentions to reunite owners with their lost items, they can easily be seen by malicious actors who use the images and details to target residents.
