Extreme rainfall forces closure of Mountain Road

The unprecedented volume of water has washed a considerable amount of stone and gravel out of the drainage ditches onto the road between tower bends and the Guthrie memorial.

The police closed the road just before 3.00am this morning.

Works teams went up initially but the conditions coupled with the night time meant any works would have been extremely difficult so the operation was held off until better light. 

A further review of the closed road will be taken at 12.00pm.
