Fire crews tackle guesthouse blaze

Fire crews from Port Erin and Douglas were out in force yesterday evening to tackle a blaze in the converted loft space of a guesthouse in Port St Mary.

The fire on Bay View Road was discovered and the alarm raised by the occupant who also attempted to tackle the blaze with the portable fire extinguishers on the premises.

Four fire personnel in breathing apparatus used a high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire in a matter of minutes.

The crews remained at the scene for some time afterwards to cut away burnt material.

While tackling the fire the occupant received minor burns and slight smoke inhalation, he was treated on scene by ambulance crews but was not required to attend Noble's Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire was thought to be a rechargeable battery pack, used for a photography hobby.
