The Department of Infrastructure is considering whether public sector rents should go up again this year.
Minister Ray Harmer told the House of Keys it's up to local authorities to decide whether rents go up, but they can't make changes without his department's permission.
Rents have risen by an average of more than 35 per cent in the last four years, according to government figures.
