Harbour restrictions to be introduced to improve safety

Douglas Harbour is one of the department's main concerns

Fishermen will be banned from fishing in some harbour areas around the Island in an effort to improve safety.

The Department of Infrastructure has agreed to identify proposed restricted areas in the approaches to all harbours, after a number of vessels ingested floating fishing gear causing damage.

In these restricted areas no fishing gear will be permitted and all potting fishermen, including those who fish as a hobby, have been reminded not to lay any fishing gear in the approaches.

Harbour users and fishermen have been consulted over the proposals and the department has said it may also extend the harbour limits, with Douglas being the main concern.
