A portrait of Illiam Dhone is to be sent away for 'analysis and conservation.'
Manx National Heritage says the painting, which is one of the largest in its collection, has been removed from display to be inspected by a specialist.
It's then hoped to be sent away as no facilities for large scale x-ray and infrared imaging are available on Island.
The study will help the organisation learn more about the original appearance of the painting and possibly the artist.
Illiam Dhone is a controversial figure in Manx history and was ultimately executed at Hango Hill in 1663 on a charge of treason.
