Investigation launched after child is approached

Police have launched an investigation after a man in Douglas approached a six-year-old boy on Monday morning.

It happened at 8.30am in the area of Harcroft Meadows.

The man is described as white, aged between 30 and 50, about 5ft 6in tall with shoulder-length greying dark hair and wearing spectacles.

He was of unkempt appearance and was wearing a tan-coloured 'barbour'-style coat and blue washed-out denim jeans.

He left the area riding an old-style bicycle, which is possibly red in colour.

Inspector Phil Shimmin said the enquiry is ongoing and a number of lines are being pursued.

A number of individuals have been spoken to since Monday in order to eliminate them from this investigation.

Local officers have been conducting extra patrols of the area with a view to identifying the man in question.

Inspector Shimmin added that he’s aware that the incident has been the subject of some discussion on social media websites and this has resulted in significant speculation as to who may be responsible.

The police have appealed to the public not to publicly name individuals online who they believe may be responsible as this has legal ramifications.

Inspector Derek Flint of Douglas police told us more (see audio).
