Island to possibly become Man and Biosphere reserve

    Biosphere reserves around the world.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture are looking into the possibility of becoming a recognised \'Man and biosphere Reserve\'

DEFA Minister Phil Gawne explained it would involve people and nature working together to ensure sustainable use of natural resources.

UNESCO's Man and Biosphere programmes cover more than 341 reserves in 94 countries.

When carrying their seal of approval it could carry economic, social and environmental benefits for the Island.

The Island would need to meet minimum criteria and adhere to certain conditions before being admitted into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
