Jail for couple who wasted police time

A couple from Douglas have been jailed for wasting 50 hours of police time after lying about what happened during an assault.

40-year-old Susan Janet Moore and 27-year-old Daniel Sydney Andrews, both of Albany Road, were sentenced at Douglas Courthouse last week.

The couple had been on a night out with friends on May 21st last year but began arguing when they returned home with Moore claiming Andrews had headbutted her.

After a request from Moore two of her friends turned up at the property - one of the men became involved in a fight with Andrews and threw him into the front garden where he fell unconscious.

When emergency services arrived at the scene Moore lied about what had happened telling officers her boyfriend been jumped by two men in the garden - Andrews later said the same.

The duo later pleaded guilty to wasting police time - Moore's advocate told the court she was afraid of what would happen if she told the truth adding "she was terrified of, in effect, reprisals".

Andrew's advocate told the court it was Andrews who'd been the victim of a "very serious assault" in which his heart had stopped and he'd stopped breathing.

Addressing why no-one had been charged in relation to that he told Magistrates "if your worships are wondering that, we're wondering that too".

Sentencing the pair Magistrates sent Moore to prison for eight weeks - Andrews was handed a two week sentence.
