Memorial step in the right direction says former policeman

A memorial to mark the 25th anniversary

Douglas Council will install a new memorial to honour the victims of the Summerland fire as a way of marking the 40th anniversary of the disaster.

Three granite columns bearing the names of the 50 people who were killed in 1973 will be installed in the Kaye Memorial Garden at the foot of Summer Hill.

 

It will be placed alongside a memorial stone which was laid to mark the 25th anniversary in 1998.

3,000 people were inside the leisure complex when it went up in flames with the Manx community rallying to help in the aftermath.

Former policeman Dudley Butt was on duty that night - he says he doesn't think the tragedy has ever been properly marked:
