The Office of Fair Trading are advising caution on the Isle of Man following numerous reports of a new telephone scam in circulation.
The Office has recently been contacted by consumers and local businesses who have received calls saying there are problems or warnings on their computers, with the caller claiming to be from Microsoft or Windows Maintenance.
Following an initial chat the callers then raise the issue of how much they charge to deal with the problem.
So far no one has been caught out by the scam.
You're urged to simply hang up the phone if you think you're speaking to a scammer, alternatively you just need to say you don't want to make an immediate decision, in this instance hang up and report them.
If bank information gets into the wrong hands it can be disastrous with accounts emptied and personal details used to set up fraudulent identities.
Anyone seeking further information can contact the OFT on 686565.
