Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer says it's inevitable the Island will phase out petrol vehicles - but it could take up to 50 years.
This week, the UK announced new cars, vans and trucks that run on fossil fuels won't be available after 2040.
Mr Harmer says that gives the Island time to plan for the future, adding an infrastructure strategy approved by Tynwald this month includes provisions for electric vehicles.
But he says it'll take a while before petrol and diesel die out completely:
