Plans for new tram facility after building is deemed unsafe

Plans have been submitted for a new horse tram facility after it was found the existing building is a risk to public safety.

The Department of Infrastructure is looking to erect a temporary building in the car park of the Summerland site - it will serve as a tram shed and stables.

The department will continue running the horse trams for the 2017 and 2018 seasons - but an inspection of the Strathallan tram depot showed significant structural issues.

It's been deemed unsafe with a recommendation that the building should be decommissioned as soon as possible.

The DOI says the Summerland structure is a short term solution to keep the trams running - the hope is for Strathallan to be 'sympathetically re-developed'.
