Police criticised for wasting court time

Police on the Isle of Man have been criticised for charging a serving prisoner with harassment without seeking guidance first.

At Douglas Courthouse yesterday Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes accused them of wasting the court's time after the charge had to be withdrawn.

28-year-old Anthony Lyons stood accused of conduct amounting to harassment from November 10th last year.

However the prosecutor told the court that police hadn't sought advice from the Attorney General's Chambers and the alleged offence had related to a "single incident".

He asked the Deputy High Bailiff to withdraw the charge saying it was not in the "public interest" to proceed.

She agreed but said she wanted the officer responsible, and their supervisor, to contact the court with an explanation.
