The Office of Fair Trading has cited the massive boom in social media for making its job increasingly difficult.
Opportunistic traders have been utilising Facebook and Twitter to lure people into scams.
The latest issue surrounds a trader operating in the Merseyside area selling counterfeit sportswear and expensive designer clothing.
It would appear the scam is specifically targeting people on the Island.
