School dinners to increase in price

The price of a school meal is to rise for the first time in two years.

School dinners at primary schools will increase by 10 pence to £1.95 from the start of the new term in September.

According to the School Meals Service, which is operated by the Department of Education and Children, the move is due to a steady increase in food price inflation over the last two years.

Children of parents in receipt of Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employed Person’s Allowance or Income Support are eligible for free school meals.
