    Small business scheme welcomes 1,000th client

    A scheme which helps local people set up new businesses has welcomed its 1,000th client.

    The Small Business Start Up Scheme which is run by the Department of Economic Development was started in 1996 and had just 20 clients in the first year. 

    The initiative now comprises of an advisory service, financial assistance and training - including up to £1,500 towards materials and equipment.  

    Political member for the department Laurence Skelly said local businesses were the grass roots of the economy:
