Survey reveals majority want referendum on VAT negotiations

Professor Hugh Davidson

MAnx People Power survey tackles contentious VAT sharing issues

The latest batch of results from the Manx People Power survey has revealed a majority of people would like to see a referendum on VAT negotiations.

The VAT sharing agreement with the UK has been a highly topical issue of late with another change to it seeing a huge amount cut from Government’s yearly spending - roughly £190 million equating to 35% from 2014.

Most of the 1055 interviewees revealed they are very concerned about this future change, nearly half felt that VAT negotiations were poor, with 56% saying the Manx Government’s performance was also poor.

A large majority of respondents want to see VAT proposals submitted to referendum before accepting the new deal with the UK.
