Weight of domestic waste collections in Malew up 30%

Saturday, 18 April 2020 08:24

By Ewan Gawne - Local Democracy Reporter

The chairman of Malew Commissioners has called for the safe reintroduction of some recycling facilities, to allow citizens to dispose of waste gathered during the pandemic.

All amenity sites closed last month, which, along with the cancellation of kerbside collections, has resulted in a stark increase in the volumes of domestic rubbish.

Malew Commissioners have reported a 30 per cent increase in the weight of domestic waste collected in the last two weeks.

The parish has also fallen victim to fly-tipping, which authority chairman Nigel Bazley thinks may be a result of frustrations caused due to a lack of access to waste disposal facilities.

Douglas Council has also recorded an increase in fly-tipping in recent weeks.
