A woman and four horses have died following a road crash in Renfrewshire.

Emergency services were alerted to a collision involving a Mercedes A-Class car and MAN box van on the A737 near Howwood at around 3.10am on Monday.

Police Scotland said a number of calls around that time also reported six horses running loose on the road.

A 59-year-old woman, a passenger in the Mercedes, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 52-year-old male driver of the car was taken to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, while a 33-year-old male passenger was transported to the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) in Paisley.

The 59-year-old male driver of the van was also taken to the RAH for assessment.

Police Scotland said four of the horses died after being struck by vehicles and two were taken to safety.

The road was closed to allow an investigation to take place and eventually reopened at 2pm.
