  • This month the Island's branch of Samaritans celebrates its 40th anniversary - the service offers emotional and confidential support to people who are struggling to cope. To mark the celebration, volunteers hosted a small gathering on Douglas Prom tonight, to pay respects to those who have lost their lives to suicide on the Isle of Man. 40 pairs of shoes were laid to raise awareness of the prevalence of suicide, both in the Isle of Man and around the world. A piper and drummer also beated 40 seconds. ‘The statistics say one person dies around the world every 40 seconds due to suicide and behind every statistic is a life tragically lost.'
